after installing windows 7, has anyone gotten a weird blank unnamed icon sitting on the desktop?

Not I. If you right click on it, can you select Properties?

nope, no properties. the only right click options are Cut, Create Shortcut, Delete. i hope it's not important..cuz it's gonna go in the trash
