Default Strange Re-Install Issue - 02-02-2009, 08:33 PM

First install I loaded entire Windows 7 DVD from USB to just check it out and it took up just under half of my drive. Decided to make a VLite install. Everything worked ok I thought. On first boot, I noticed that Media Player and my Windows Explorer shortcut I created were still in the quick launch or dock, whatever it's called now (next to Start menu). The other issue was it was not happy when I tried installing the drivers. So, it seems to me that formatting for a clean install is not working like it should. This time around it installed the 200MB allocated drive and I'm waiting to see if it formatted correctly. I formatted it twice this time for good measure and waiting for it to finish Completing Installation.

Has anyone else seen this happen? I probably would have not noticed it if it weren't for those two icons sitting there.

Edit: Argh! Icons still there! I would think formatting would be like in XP. There is no option for a Quick or Full format. I suspect this is just doing a Quick format which pretty much just deletes the MBR.

My new cheap, slim USB CD-W arrrived a few minutes ago so I booted XP, did a full format and then powered off before it installed. I will see what happens this time.

I did that after having problems installing over a xp/ubuntu dual boot, problem was that it left install files behind and upon boot gave me *Earlier version of windows/windows 7* boot choice. Also got a lot of C:/ runtime errors w/ firefox.

I recommend a full, clean install with all features and giving feedback to MS in hopes that they will fix any bugs before public release.

I posted in the MS TechNet forum and got a response with two workarounds:

Well, you actually have a couple of options.

1. When you do a clean install, boot with DVD, select Custom and click on the Drive Options (advanced) icon. Delete the existing partition(s). From here, there is no need to do anything else with the drive if you plan on using the entire contents for the OS as Windows 7 will take care of the rest when you click NEXT. In other words, install on Unallocated Space.

2. When you are at the screen to select Upgrade or Custom, hit <shift><f10>. This will bring you to the Windows PE command prompt. You should see an X:\sources. From there, you can do a (not quick) format, which depending on your hard drive size, will take a while to complete.

I'm going to give this a try now and edit this post with the results. I am going to try Custom option 2 btw.

Edit: FN+F10 doesn't work so I'm trying option 1.
Edit: Still have old pinned icons
Edit: Chose repair and able to get to Command Prompt! Formatting now.
Final Edit: Same two pinned icons sitting there. Bleh, I give up. Formatted 200MB hidden partition as well.

I did not have any problems. Sounds like the dual boot option you chose caused the problem with the boot loader.
