Default Update to Windows 7 SP1 when you have dualboot (or triple boot) - 02-25-2011, 04:49 AM

Windows 7 SP1 is available now. You can download standalone installer from Mircrosoft homepage or use Windows Update for smaller download. But if you already have dualboot or triple boot with Mac OS, you will get error when trying to install. Here are solution:

1. Click Start > type "diskpart"
2. Run the following command:
select disk 0
list partition
select partition x
active

x is the partition of Windows, you can look at the partition size to recognize it.
3. Update to SP1, then restart.
4. Run diskpart again and use following commands:
select disk 0
list partition
select partition y
active

y is the partirtion of Mac OS, you can look at the partition size to recognize it.

And now you have Windows 7 updated to SP1 while keeping the original dualboot.
Good luck!

Thank you for this information, but I am not sure why it's in the 'General Apple and Mac OS X Discussion' forum since it is primarily related to Windows7.

It does talk about double/triple booting and what you have to do to work around the issue. But I will move this to the Windows 7 section.

The instructions assume that the Windows partition is not the active one. In my dual-boot system, it is.

It's been so long since I built my dual boot (OSX and Win7) 10v, I forget how to do some things. Most things, really. I know which op sys is in which partition because one thing I do recall is I made the Win7 partition bigger.

Partition 4 - Primary - Size = 19 KB, Offset = 512 B
Partition 1 - Primary - Size = 200 MB, Offset = 20 KB
Partition 2 - Primary - Size = 325 GB, Offset = 201 MB, Win7
Partition 3 - Primary - Size = 139 GB, Offset = 326 GB, OSX

When I boot, then tap the keyboard, the default op sys is OSX. I hit the left arrow key to select Win7 most of the time.

So, which partition is my active one? I always thought it had to be the NBI/Chameleon one in order to do dual boot?

I think the active partition is OSX - your third partition.

I thought the active partition had to be where Chamleon is installed? If the active partition is where one of the operating systems is loaded, how would you ever boot into the other operating system?

You could do what I do and use EasyBCD to make Windows the active partition and select OS X as an alternate boot source. I prefer that to Chameleon.

OOps. I booted into a Ubuntu flash drive and used GParted to make my Windows 7 partition have a flag as "boot". I realized this didn't work so I went back and undid the flagging. Now whenever chameleon comes up and I select Windows 7, all I get is a blinking cursor. I need help please!

Default Not sure which partition is for Win7 - 05-25-2011, 08:44 PM

I guess I made the mistake of making both partitions the same size. I don't know which one is which. this is what I see. Can anyone help? Which partition is Win7 and which is SL?

Partition 4 - Primary - Size = 19 KB, Offset = 512 B
Partition 1 - Primary - Size = 200 MB, Offset = 20 KB
Partition 2 - Primary - Size = 116 GB, Offset = 200 MB
Partition 3 - Primary - Size = 116 GB, Offset = 116 GB

Thanks for your help
