Default Build 7000 - Size, features and performance - 01-10-2009, 09:38 PM

Unlike other builds, this one does sleep now with the stock STEC 16GB, and no unknown devices in device manager (prior to installing the "Base devices" in device manager, it would not wake).
As for total install size, with almost all windows features off (Solitaire, Microsoft .NET framework, and Windows OCR left on) page file off, hibernation off and ccleaner running regularly, my install is 5.5GB / 14.1GB with the following apps installed and working:

CCleaner
CoreCodec
doPdf 6
ESET nod32
Google Chrome
OpenSSL
mIRC
Pidgin
Skype
unlocker
WinRAR

And WoW running off of an external (I don't play, just wanted to try it since a friend transferred his install folder to my external)

The microphone and webcam both work in Skype, unlike build 6801.

Battery life has improved dramatically with sleep actually working, I can watch a full length movie in MPC or Media Center, and still browse the web for another couple of hours.

Just wanted to share my experience with this build so far

Out of curiosity (I'm not going to do the beta), does W7 come with a built-in firewall, like Vista has?

Hi! Please tell me how did you make your build this small and what did you remove from windows? Do you know if it is possible to install it on a 8GB SDD? Thank you very much.

Flaw
What version or where did you get the drivers for the unknown and base sub devices? I've got the stock 32GB. Loads fine, runs fine, just won't wake up. I've tried both the XP version of the battery meter and the Vista one for the Mini 12. They both make the unknown device go away. And I've disable the cardslot in the bios so I don't have the two Sub Base Devices. But still no wake up. Woke fine for Vista.
Thanks

It is possible to install on the 8GB sdd, and I listed how I managed to keep the size down in my first post. The page file (under system in the control panel) and hibernation file (command prompt -> powercfg -h OFF), along with temp files cleaned with ccleaner. I also listed the windows features I kept on, not sure how much space removing all of the others saved.

I used the JMicron drivers linked in several Vista threads, along with Synaptics drivers, and the Vista battery meter drivers. I also disabled wake on USB in the BIOS, which seems to be the cause of the sleep issue (disabling it in build 6801 didn't fix the sleep issue). Not sure if its a combination of the BIOS setting and drivers, but sleep just works in this build now
