Default Windows 7 and Streaming Video on Home Network - 01-12-2010, 02:16 PM

Totally unscientific, but I can now stream video from my Windows Home Server to my Dell Mini 9 (802.11g) without hiccups or skipped frames, unlike Windows XP on the same unit. Don't know the reason why, but a happy camper nonetheless.

For what its worth, I have 2gb ram and a 128gb PCIe SSD.

I just recently upgraded a couple more of my systems with Windows 7, starting with my server which was running WinXP Pro.

I ran VLC media player to make sure the program and network connections were working on my 5 year old laptop and nearly watched half a film waiting to see the usual skips and such. -never happened.

Then I got out my Mini 9 and tried it...with the same results.

WOW -That's all I can manage to say.
I was chalking up the skipping problems to the wireless G connection all this time!

NOTHING -it just played...flawlessly!

So, no it's not just you.

I'm not a M$haft fanboy, but Windows 7 is a WOW. I know Apple is more fashionable than M$haft (Dior vs Kmart blue light special), and even got started with the Dell Mini 9 because it was an operational Hackintosh, but the Dell was really meant for Windows 7.

Not sure about home server, but (assuming you're running W7 on both?) you could always join both PCs to a 'homegroup' and stream videos through WMP. Not sure, if that's exactly what you want. VLC will definitely give you more features and options, if you need them.
