Default Which version is fastest for the mini 9? - 01-01-2010, 11:29 PM

I am currently running windows 7 ultimate on my mini 9, but I am thinking that maybe a little bit overkill. I am a software developer and have a msdn membership so I have access to any version of windows 7 (including the starter version).

I am just trying to find the right balance of speed to usability. Starter maybe too limited, but might be better as it may have a small footprint on the SSD which by the way is only 16GB.

Anyways, should I just keep ultimate or try downgrading? I did read the posts about optimization and I did follow those for my current copy of ultimate. But theres so much stuff in ultimate I'm never going to use on a netbook

Thanks,
Bennett

The edition you have will make no difference in performance. All the higher edition costs you is disk space.

x2. I'm running Professional on my Mini only because I didn't need the extra few things that Ultimate brings. (I have a TechNet Plus account so I can use any version as well.)

May not be of any help, but I see no difference in performance between Win7 RC (Ultimate) and Win7 Home Premium currently on the machine.

I think that the major difference with Ultimate is the bitlocker drive encryption which I can almost bet that 9 out of 10 people dont even use, I know I dont and probably never will..

Yep, main difference is diskspace and some apps like bitlocker. Probably a few additional services to do with those apps. To anyone else who doesn't have an MSDN or TechNet account, you can always use Vlite on windows 7 to shrink your install.

bennet, I have used vLite many times during the beta and release candidates and am running Ultimate on my 9 with 16GB SSD also. Just don't do it when you are tired! I removed WiFi support by accident this last time.

if you don't want to create a new image/install you may want to also edit your services and set some to manual and disable others. The other thing you can do is remove some Windows 7 features in control panel under Programs & Features.

I run a vlited windows 7 on my mini and I think I somehow removed the ability to share media through a homegroup. But I can't be bothered to re-install for the sake of that one problem I have.

So long as you do some reading on doing it, and have some idea about what does what, vlite is great.
