Default Clean install on W7 upgrade - 10-30-2009, 03:24 PM

I got my W7P upgrade version last night and installed it on a new drive. Upon trying to activate it kept saying can't use upgrade for clean install, error 0xC004F061.
Just got off the phone with MS support, and here is what they had me do.
In the registry editor, go to: HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows\CurrentVersion\Set up\OOBE and change MediaBootInstall value to 0
Then run a command prompt as administrator and run this:
cscript.exe slmgr.vbs -rearm
Then activate your key code.

Somebody at Microsoft has been visiting Thurrott's Windows Supersite (wonder if that was before or after Microsoft chastised him for publishing this and the install twice instructions for a clean install from upgrade media)?

Default clean install? - 11-09-2009, 07:09 PM

When I am doing a clean install of the student version Windows 7 how do I get into registry edit and then into the command line?

Sorry about this question. I am a newbie.

Thanks.

The bit about the registry editor is after you install, before you activate.

Click on the "orb" (start button), type in "cmd.exe". When you see the shortcut for cmd.exe appear, right click on it and select "Start as Administrator. This opens a command line window.

Here you can type "regedit" to run the registry editor, though if you've never done this before, I will caution you that you can truly hose your system if you are not careful.

Yeah, X2, but at least after a clean install it's nothing to just re-install lol.

Hate to bump a old thread but seeing how his info came from MS support this is too funny....If you did the reg hack to clean install W7 the update from the other day KB971033 will see it and phone home and your W7 installation will no longer be valid.

Trust me..I know as I just had it happen to me 2 days ago.

Huh, I've done this on my desktop and M9, I'll have to make sure to hide that update, or even try it on my M9.
