According to my previous experiences, if you have the files for upgrade from an older version of the operating system to a new one, I can’t manage to clean install it. I successfully had windows 7 on my computer were that I did an upgrade. And depending on what operating system you are using, the steps for upgrading are different. However I have done some research after manage to get online, clean install is possible. All you have to do is choose to install the OS but do not enter the activation code, after you are at the desktop, install it again, and use the activation code there.

In my case I had no previous version of Windows, my Mini 9 came with Ubuntu. XP is not upgradeable so requires a clean install.
However, if you are going from Windows 7 Starter to Premium, Pro or Ultimate, I would just go ahead and do an inplace upgrade.
