Default Win 7 Install Questions w/ new SSD - 10-16-2009, 01:36 PM

I just recieved my A90 and the memoryans sdd upgrade (Supertalent 32). The a90 came with xp home on the 8gb ssd. I will be purchasing the Windows 7 upgrade on the 22nd.

Do I need to install XP on the new SSD before I upgrade it to 7?

Depends. If it's the Upgrade and not the full version, you might have to. I'm not sure how Microsoft handles those any more.

I have a dell usb dvd drive, how can I get my mini 9 to boot off of that drive to do a clean install of 7 on the new ssd drive?

Last I heard you can't upgrade XP to 7. Clean installs only.

Yes, you should be able to boot of a Windows 7 DVD using an external drive and install directly to the SSD. Make sure the DVD drive is plugged in, and press F12 during the BIOS screen to get to the boot menu. Select the DVD drive and off you go.

I haven't tried it yet, since I don't have install media. However, previous version of Windows did have a way to do it (usually involved inserting an install CD/DVD from the previous version of Windows to authenticate.)

So under that theory, the unopened unsued Vista upgrade I have here would work to authenticate the Upgrade Widows 7 Version?

It is possible to do a clean install with the upgrade media, but it is a complex process. The general theme is supposedly similar to what is discussed at http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...rade_clean.asp

I have a reference at home with, if I recall correctly, more information and will look at it tonight.

I've heard that Windows 7 works the same way. If the disc wont let you activate at first. Install it as a evaluation version. Then install again and it will let you upgrade from the trial to the full version.

Press the number 0 when you are on the BIOS screen to select the boot device.
