Whether or not XP Mode is useful to you depends on what you want it for. If it's to run selected applications that don't run under Win7, then it's fine. If you want to use XP for itself, then a separate partition is better, assuming you have a valid license for XP. What I use it for is to run a 16-bit game my wife likes on my 64-bit Win7 desktop system. The way it works is that the game looks like any other app on her desktop, but when you run it, it starts the VM in the background. You'd hardly know it was there.
