Default Want to go back to Dell XP - 08-20-2009, 03:13 AM

Hi,

Did a search, but couldn't find much..

I got my 10v today and I installed Windows 7 RC1. Everything was going well until I tried to connect to the internet. I have been trying for hours and the wireless still does not work. My router is B/G and I have the 1510 card. (I heard it wasn't too good, but thought that was for N) The connection utility says that there is no internet connection and only shows 2 bars (my other computer right next to it has a full signal).

Anyways, I was wondering how I can revert back to the stock XP it came with. I tried going into safe mode or recovery (tried pushing F8 or F11 on boot, don't know if these are the correct buttons for this computer) but it goes straight to Windows 7. I have the CDs Dell gave me but I don't really want to open the sleeves they are in, if I need to return the 10v (unless Dell won't mind).

Thanks

There is no way to downgrade from Windows7 to WindowsXP. You'll have to reinstall from the Dell cd using an external cdrom drive or installing from a usb flashdrive (if the XP installer even supports that, I have no idea).

I would attempt to find better drivers for your network card. I doubt there will be any dedicated Windows7 drivers for it yet, but if you can find vista drivers they'll work just as well. If you haven't already, check Windows Update.

You have several options.
If your computer has the Dell recovery partition (the early Mini 10v's don't have one) and you didn't delete it when you installed Windows 7, you could mount the Dell factory image and it would revert to the way it left the factory. Windows 7 probably replaced the original Recovery Environment but the Factory Image could be mounted manually if it still exists.

Alternatively, you could try to get the System Restoration CD set from Dell Tech. Support. These CDs install everything the way it came from the factory; the Operating System and all of the software.
Lastly, you could install XP from the disk that came with the computer. Breaking the seal will have no effect on returning the 10v.

Frankly I would search for better WiFi drivers because that is a pretty good WiFi card and Windows 7 really runs well on the 10v.

Or change to an Intel 5300 wireless card which is cheap to buy on eBay and works very well on both the 2.4Ghz and 5GHz bands.

+1 for the Intel 5300. No matter what OS I tried, I just could not get the 1510 to work correctly. Sometimes it would connect, but most of the time it would not. Since I plan to take my 10v on the road with me when I travel, I need something that I can count on to connect reliably to a variety of wireless networks. The 1510 just wasn't it.

Presumably it is the half mini card which is required here?

Thanks.

I just did a search and found the 5300 comes in full and half size, just make sure the listing says half size.

For you that have upgraded to the 5300, what do you do about the 3rd antenna? Anything?

No, make sure you buy the FULL size 5300. The half-size card is too small. Some people manage to make it work.

I bought an extra antenna and installed it - works fine. See Intel Wifi Link 5300 + 3rd Antenna Mod

The 10v uses a half-size card. Did I miss a detour and the hardware change to a 9?

Oh, didn't realize the 10v uses a different size! The 9 uses the full-size card.
