The first mistake was trying to install Windows 7. It won't fit on a 4GB SSD, you need 16GB minimum unless you modify the install media, and then you need at least 8GB.
You should be able to boot off the Ubuntu disc and reinstall that OS. If the Ubuntu disc works and your external drive is recognized, you should be able to press 0 during the BIOS boot screen to get to the boot menu and select the external drive.

Well, I wish to Thank all of you for you suggestion (and gigs).
I tried a different USB port and the DVD booted and I was able to reinstall Unbutu.
I now realize Win7 is too large for my 4GB SSD
I couldn't follow the directions in the link if the DVD wouldn't boot!!! AND following the directions would end me up at the same point..... Win7 is too large!!!
Seriously Thank for your patience and support. I am ordering the 32GB Runcore (then I can follow the directions in the link!)

All this talk about booting from CDs sounds painful. If you have a 4 GB USB thumb drive you can always use unetbootin to copy Linux liveCD's or install DVDs to USB Drives. I haven't burned an Install CD for XP/Vista/Win7/Linux in over 2 years.
Of course the Dell version of Ubuntu may be different - my Mini came with XP, so unetbootin might be some problems with that

Glad you figured it out--and enjoy the RunCore! Having the DVD drive makes installation so much easier. You don't need to do anything special to install Windows 7 since you have a DVD drive to use.
