Ok so I figured I better correct some misconceptions about Vista on the Dell Mini. You'll read all over the place that it won't work or that it's too slow. That is completely incorrect.
The day I received my Mini I upgraded the RAM to 2gb (pulled out of my now sold EEEPC 900) and started to install Vista. I had previously created a Vlited Vista Ultimate SP1 install in anticpitation once I'd ordered from Dell. The only things I removed from the standard install were the language packs, UAC and System Restore. Having upgraded the RAM I reduced the page file size to 250mb. You don't need anything bigger than that.
After the intial install I was left with around 9gb of free space. In Australia the only models we can get are the 16gb XP flavours. Most of the drivers install ok as part of the Vista install. Have since installed Office and a few other programs I'm left with 6.5gb of free space. Also picked up a 16gb SDHC to store my files on.
To get Aero to run you need to download the latest Intel graphics drivers for Vista http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...%2032&lang=eng
. Without them you'll have Basic theme only.
Once connected to the internet I needed to update the Ethernet driver and also downloaded the SD/MMC card controller drivers. Everthing else works out of the box.
Now for performance. I'd previously tried to run Vista on my EEE 900 and it sucked big time. The Mini is a totally different story. In fact I've had several other users comment that it runs faster than Dell's XP install. I can't confirm this as I blew away my XP immediately. But what I can confirm is Vista not only works fine but it excels on the Mini. Full Aero interface and all.
I've even gone as far as peeling off my XP sticker and picked up a Vista one on Ebay. I hope my comments help anyone who was considering installing Vista but wasn't quite sure if it would work.
