I'm trying to install Vista on my 'fresh' mini right now. I'm using an external DVD-ROM (RW drive actually) with my Mini which has the 16GB drive and 2GB ram. It seems to be taking a fairly long amount of time to "expand files"... like moving 1% every 3-5 minutes.

Is this common / normal for the minis?

It's been running the "expanding files' portion for about 10 minutes now and I'm only up to 14%.

Just curious to see if others have had similar issues / problems.

I am using a vLite'd version of Vista, if that might make a difference.

it took me literally hours to finish the vista installer. at one point nothing changed on the screen during the last install step for at least half an hour and I thought it had frozen, but I left it alone a while more and eventually it finished. i'd advise to just do something else and come back to it later.

Seems to take much longer installing from an external dvd. I installed from a bootable usb stick in around 40 minutes.

Sounds like installing Vista takes forever. Maybe it is a good idea to clone the drive after installing the OS?

You were all correct.

The Install from an External DVD did seem to "hang" a few times, but after maybe two hours total for the Install, my Mini is running Vista Ultimate and it truly runs well! I'm actually quite surprised at how quickly Vista runs on the 'mini'... it actually runs Vista Ultimate better than I've seen on any other PC I've owned.



I installed Vista Ultimate (stripped via vLite), then installed the Synaptics driver from Synaptics site, and then I ghosted the drive, to ensure it wont take that long for the 'shell' to reinstall in the future, should I need to.
