That is interesting. I have Vista on my 9 with 2GB's of RAM, and would not even consider Vista with only 1. I'm with you, though--I wonder how real world performance is.
(And I highly recommend a slimmer Vista with vLite to those stuck with Vista & 1GB RAM.)

While I am still awaiting my own Mini 9 and the extra mod parts I ordered to install Vista on it, I assume that the eventual seat of Vista I install will be a drastically vlite-ed and (in the eyes of Microsoft) a drastically pared down iteration of what Vista is "supposed to be". This is kind of contentious to what Dell and Microsoft "want" out of their hardware and software. Think how much people would complain if they ordered a brand new Mini 9 or 12 with Vista that could hardly do anything or have much spare hard disk space because the OS gobbled it all up just to keep itself running? What we "end users" are doing by "hot rodding" our netbooks with aftermarket parts and operating systems kind of flies in the face of the little agreements Dell and Microsoft have.

Dell wants to sell you a hardware product. Microsoft wants that product to have Vista on it, if possible. Due to certain market realities (e.g., eee pc), Vista won't run on all machines on offer, so as a second resort, they allow OEMs to preinstall XP instead. If you want to install Vista on your machine that originally came with XP, MS could not care less, so long as they're being paid for that copy of Vista.

They are still shipping Mini 12 with Vista in the UK. I assume they have to continue to support this, even if they ultimately offer only Win XP and Ubuntu - that must be a kicker for Dell to have to support all three variants.
I'm using Mini 12 with Vista and 1Gig. It works fine as a web surfing netbook, it is a bit sluggish though and certainly wouldn't cut it for heavier applications. I reinstalled Vista from scratch. I haven't pared down using V-Lite nor turned down the UI features (i.e. animation effects, etc) which might help.
I'd like to evaluate XP for a while, but not feeling enough Vista pain to justify the effort.
