First, check out this for most of the disk space issue:

Next, do you have System Restore still enabled? That can also account for exaggerated drive space consumption.

I was hoping there is a way to cleanup after the updates like you can after installing a service pack. My guess is that each update that is downloaded is residing on my system twice: once as the installation/uninstallation package, and once as the integrated update.

here is a good article to read, it pertains to XP not vista but the same principle

it saves the update files so you can rollback. Once the machine is running and you got no problems just go ahead and delete em
