From the www.ubuntumini.com site:
In a terminal type:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
At the end of alsa-base file add:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell
Reboot your Mini
After logging in, double click the volume icon and turn your speaker volume up.

does the upgrade to 8.10 address the 1GB limitation without having to compile a new kernel? I'm pretty happy with 8.04, although this is the first time I'm using linux, so I dont know any better. But I would like to upgrade my RAM to 2Gb and I haven't heard anything about a fix yet.
