Default Vodafone Australia 3G broadband Ubuntu 8.10 - 11-15-2008, 02:48 AM

I had the opportunity to try my friends Vodafone USB 3G modem recently.

After plugging in the modem, Ubuntu reported it as a new device. There is driver / applications stored locally on the USB modem, and it auto mounted as a CD drive. I was propmted to run the software installer, but resisted the temptation.

After declining the software install, Network manager detected the modem too, and prompted me to set up my connection.
It was too easy, Click yes to run the setup utility, Select desired Australian 3G carrier from list, click forward. Verify the carrier information, click apply.

It worked immediately, out of the box. All the Carrier specific config (number, APN) is pre defined once you select your local Carrier.

Totally impressed !

Now we just need someone to work out how to get the WWan slot working !
