Angry Ignoring Trackpad While Typing - 11-09-2008, 04:24 AM

Hey guys. Was looking over the internet for this and it is really simple and works perfetly.
the default installation of Ubuntu from dell already uses the correct drive

just run this command in the terminal
syndaemon -i 1 -d

You can add it so Sessions under System > Preferences to get it to run every time on startup if you like it

this way when you are typing you don't accidentally move the mouse or tap on things to click them

Thanks, Jeff!

I've been intending to do something about this, but you've done the research for me!

Does anyone know how to disable this feature for SHIFT, CTRL, ALT, and Super keys?

I had that problem myself... I don't have Ubuntu on the Mini anymore, but when I was using it I just waited the 2 seconds.

I got an error to do with some config not being shared or something. Fixed by going into /etc/xorg.conf and adding

Option “SHMConfig” “on”

inside the synaptics trackpad section, then restart x and tap that command above into the terminal.

This does not work for me. Entering from the command line:

syndaemon -i 1 -d

gets me the message:

Can't access shared memory area. SHMConfig disabled?

So I edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add
Option “SHMConfig” “on”
to the appropriate section and rebooted. Then got errors and complaints from X saying it only could run at 800x600.

This process should work, this Ubuntu wiki page gives the same instructions:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Synap ... hpad/Hardy
But they didnt work for me.
Here is a bug report and long thread for Ubuntu on this problem, with various fixes suggested....

See "man syndaemon" for full details - but I recommend:

Code:
syndaemon -t 1 -d -t -K
Quote:
OPTIONS
-i <idle-time>
How many seconds to wait after the last key press before
enabling the touchpad. (default is 2.0s).

-d Start as a daemon, ie in the background.

-p <pid-file>
Create a pid file with the specified filename. A pid file will
only be created if the program is started in daemon mode.

-t Only disable tapping and scrolling, not mouse movements, in
response to keyboard activity.

-k Ignore modifier keys when monitoring keyboard activity.

-K Like -k but also ignore Modifier+Key combos.
