I searched all over google for an answer as to what the hostname should be set for. It seems that it should be the domain assigned to it, but for a laptop that will always be changing. In the house I have my own DNS server so when I set it to minitop9.rolphers.com as is its DNS name everything works fine. However if I leave the house whenever I run sudo commands I get a hostname error... the sudo still works but I get a could not resolve host name warning. I then tried to set the hostname as a vanity... just MiniTop9. Then I always got the hostname error and had trouble starting and stopping network services like netatalk. So I have given up and just set it to localhost. No more errors.
What should the host name be set to. I thought it was supposed to be equivilant to naming your computer in OSX or Windows, but it seems to want a full URL even though there is an entry for domain right under the host name setting. then anything I put in the domain area gets erased after i close the network monitor.
So guys, what is the purpose and proper setting for hostname that works with a laptop that is moved all over the place and run on different networks?
