Unhappy n00b Linux Question: Error Log - 11-01-2008, 09:54 PM

Does Linux (Ubuntu) have a utility for looking at the system error logs? I keep having what seems like a catastrophic hang and I can't figure out why. Seems random and does not occur in every situation.

I thought it was XChat but I've see it with (dells) Firefox now too.

Alpine White, 1Mb, 16Gb SSD, 1.3Mp webcam, Stock Mini Ubuntu. (Oh yeah, and bluetooth)

Try System -> Administration -> System Log from the panel.

Also, you can examine additional log files by checking the logs in /var/log:

* Open up a terminal
* cd /var/log
* cat <name of logfile> | more

Then you can press space to scroll down the file or press 'q' to exit viewing the file.

May be worthwhile to check the Ubuntu Forums for Dell support to see if other people are having similar problems and/or post a bug in Launchpad to have the Ubuntu devs have a closer look at it.
