OO default directory is /home/username (equivalent of My Documents in XP).

USB (and SD cards and CDs) are default "mounted" (computing term for located at) /media/ (e.g. /media/disk)

So to save to USB, you have to use the "go up one level" button twice (top right in Save dialogue box - folder with arrow icon), then select /media and then /disk (or whatever your USB is called).

I find it easier to just save to the default directory and copy across when finished - but that's personal preference.
