Thumbs down Nothing Saves - 02-27-2011, 09:56 PM

I am getting sick and tired of doing the same thing over and over again....I set up my wireless (yes it works)...setup firefox, set my desktop background....cant get the res to 1366x768 either...sound is ok, webcam works....tried to install the gma500 linux drivers off the intel site, seem to install ok... when the system rebooted I was back where I started....I have done this sh*t 5 times.....so far LINUX SUCKS......all I wanted to do was get it up and running to try to get Android running.......if this is any indication of how ubuntu works..you people can keep it.....I will take Win XP/7 ANYDAY over this piece of crap
I am on Ubuntu 10.10 on a USB flashdrive

how do I get this to keep the settings?......:conf used:

Ordinarily, Linux live distros DO NOT save any changes you make, or any files you might create for that matter.

However, if you prepare it using the 'persistent file' option, then you will be able to save your settings, including your wireless info.

if you prep your flash drive using the Universal USB Installer, you can set this option when you check the box to format the drive. Use the slider to allocate the amount of memory you want to use for that file, just slide all the way to the right and that'll use all available space on the flash drive.

find more information about this here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent --for reference only, really. the universal installer is the easiest way to actually prepare your flash drive.

btw, if you like the Unity desktop in Ubuntu, cool... but if you prefer a more traditional desktop interface, try Linux Mint instead. the standard version uses Gnome desktop, which is most like Windows and Mac desktop environments. I personally didn't care for the button interface in Ubuntu (Unity)

cheers.

As Oscar stated, you need to create a LiveCD/USB with "persistence" if you want stuff to persist across reboots...

...or you can perform a normal install of Linux on a USB flash drive/hard drive/memory card/etc (this usually means putting the LiveCD/USB installer on one drive and installing to another drive as the target).

yeah I did that...gave it all the available space left on the USB stick..maybe it has something to do with the way I am shutting down....memory might not be getting flushed...gotta play with it some more...cant even get it to work on my big HP laptop...display is all messed up, cant get the wireless drivers...on the Mini it goes out and installs the Broadcomm driver for the 4322 automatically...there is a broadcomm in the HP also but it doesnt auto install...giving up on the HP,..gonna stick with just the mini, think the HP is too old (2005) for this newer stuff to work right....

thanks for the replies anyway.....still like Windows a whole lot more......cant even get the display to go to 1366x768 in linux, tried doing all that tar command stuff and all....too much to do in the command language....in windows you just click on an .exe file and its done....

There is a program called Linux Live 2.6 that does all the work for you. I have Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04 and 10.10 all installed to USB flash drives. They all have no problems saving data and settings to the flash drive where the Linux Distro also resides. Its also no problems to download additional programs to the flash drive.

Just Goggle Linux Live and it will take you to their web site where you can download the program and directions. Its pretty straight forward and I find it works better than Universal USB installer which I have used a great deal in the past. Give it a shot. I think you won't be disappointed. Fdalbor

http://www.linuxliveusb.com here is the link if you want to try it. You need to use at least a 4gig USB drive (8 is better, but 4 is fine) and don't set the save area for the all of the remaining free space; most of it; but not all. Good luck; works like a charm for me.

I agree, I tried Linux Live to create and ubuntu 9.10 USB pen drive, and I got better results than with Universal USB installer, which had created a non-bootable key - strange enough because it had worked to create a bootable 10.10 before.

Anyway, now I'd like to update to the latest kernel, but Linux Live's persistance doesn't support updating system files - see page bottom w w w.linuxliveusb.com/en/help/faq/using-your-linux/80-persistent-do-not-do .
Fdalbor, how did you manage to get your ubuntus fully updated on USB keys? Or if they aren't updated, how did you manage to get GMA500 working (I assume you had to tweak as explained in w w w.mydellmini.com/forum/dell-mini-1010/10461-guide-get-ubuntu-display-work-dell-mini-10-not-10v.html).

TIA

Its a give and take thing. I found along time ago sooner or later you are going to have your duel boot system crash as it tries to boot from grub. After losing XP two or three times using duel boot I decided to stick to running Linux from SD/HC cards or USB flash. And keeping XP safe. Remember the reason I stick to XP (and not Win7) is XP has drivers that lets you display 1024X768 on my old 1024X567 screen. 1024X768 is the most popular resolution for most programs.

I originally used the 10 not 10v fix to get the drivers to display correctly on the 1010. But Ubuntu has shortened and cleaned up the script needed to get the GMA drivers from the ubuntu repository. I don't worry about upgrading the kernel as the next version I try has the upgraded kernel. Or if 9.10 works better I stick with it. I have 9.10; 10.04 and 10.10 all installed to USB flash drives.

Go to the Ubuntu Wiki and you can get all the information to run 9.10 thru 10.10 in one short page. This is the current script

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gma500/ppa && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install poulsbo-driver-3d

The script changes from time to time as they update it. But it always seems to get shorter hahahah; fdalbor

thanks guys, I appreciate all the help and tips, the whole reason I was even trying this to begin with was I just wanted to screw around with Android a little bit, but this whole thing seems like A LOT more trouble than its worth...I also didnt want to mess with my dual boot Win XP Pro/Win 7 Ult situation (which by the way has been flawless since day 1), so I figured use the 8gb Flashdrive, but all in all the amount of little tweaks here and there and want not just seem like its way too much trouble just to get running....not for nothing but if I really wanted to get involved with this type of headache and scenario I would just use the guide on how to get OSX running on a 1010 (which I leave open as an option to play with maybe later on)......thanks again though guys.....have a good one...
