Default Risk-free GMA 500 Video Drivers - 12-31-2010, 12:23 AM

Hi. I'm trying to run ubuntu 10.10 on my netbook and its been great except I have no video. I used 2 methods of adding video (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupp...oCardsPoulsbo/
and [all variants] Guide to Get the Best Performace from the GMA 500 - Ubuntu Forums) but they ruined my computer and I had to reinstall ubuntu.... any different ways to get support? (other than changing my ubuntu version) I haven't tried actual video just video games.

In the future, you may be able to recover from a failed driver install by uninstalling the offending packages.

For example, this command will remove the drivers installed via the Ubuntu Wiki method:
Code:
sudo apt-get remove psb-kernel-source poulsbo-driver-2d poulsbo-driver-3d poulsbo-config
As for actually getting it working well, I don't have a GMA500 netbook, so all I know is gleaned from webpages like those you linked to. If they don't help, I don't have any miraculous insight.

By "here" are you referring to the Linux side of MyDellMini? For better or worse, MyDellMini sees alot more traffic on the OSX side. Also, there's alot of talk about the Dell Streak, since it's new. But I try to keep the Linux side alive

Are you sure you have the Bluetooth receiver?

Try running "lsusb" in a terminal to list USB devices. The Bluetooth receiver should show up there.

As a 1010 owner since March of 2009 I can assure you your machine does not have bluetooth. While it will show it as being on under several versions of Linux it shows it as disabled when you go to preferences in all of them because it does not exist. Sorry.

You are right about the lack of activity on the forum lately. I think it has something to do with the lack of activity in the production of new Dell netbooks to generate activity.

While I still use my 1010 a great deal as I travel alot; if it were not for Joli and Ubuntu's support for the GMA graphics I would have little to talk about the 1010 as little would be happening to generate something to comment about. Its still a good little machine; and the newer machines are not much better (if they are at all). fdalbor

Oh yea; there is no risk free video with the 1010. It is possible though. Its one reason I always install Linux on my 1010 to SD cards or USB drives instead of the hard drive. If it crashes it only takes a little while to reformat the card or drive and try again. Joli 1.2 is the easiest to get video working and I have had good results with 10.04 (long term version). They have a habit of changing the terminal script on the Poulsbo wiki at Ubuntu. The new script has not worked that well for me; but I have had others who have had good luck with it.

If you do try Joli 1.2 enable the HTML5 add on and the Java add on. They both help the video playback while streaming video's. Good luck.
