Default Mini 9 Image on USB - 01-10-2009, 12:18 AM

First.. I don't mean a bootable usb with the restore image, I mean some how getting the restored image on a bootable USB.

Second.. I'm linux dumb, so be nice..

So what I'd like to do is to somehow get get a thumbdrive set up so that when I boot from it I get the Dell Mini Ubuntu OS up and running. My place to learn more about linux.

Thanks for any help in this, even if it is a pointer in the right direction.

Do you have an external USB DVD drive? If no - do you have 2 separate 4GB USB sticks?

Do you have a copy of the Dell Ubuntu Restore DVD?

Do you have a 4GB+ USB stick to install on to?

What OS do you have on it at the moment?

I have not installed from the Restore DVD, but assuming it is similar to the Ubuntu installer...

In simple terms:
Boot from the restore DVD (select it from BIOS)
During installation, ensure you select the USB drive to install on to (not the internal SD drive)
Select manual partition
Create a single ext3 partition and mount as "/" for the whole USB drive
It will warn you about having no swap - ignore it
Follow the prompts.
Just before it installs, it will give a summary: select "Advanced" - select the USB as the place to install "Grub"
Then press go.

Unforunately, the recovery DVD is not like a normal Ubuntu install disk. It's a non-interactive wipe-and-reinstall utility.

I've been doing some research on how to set up a Dellbuntu environment on a USB stick, but have been slowed by work. Be careful with booting the Dell restore image! You get one (1) chance to confirm you want to return to factory settings before it destroys the data on your machine and re-installs!

Sorry for the delay in getting back to this.

I do have the Dell Ubuntu Restore DVD (thanks GerallK)
one 2 gig thumb and another 4gig. I can get the 4 gigs pretty cheap locally so it that is needed it can be done.

I removed the hard drive in curent laptop and removed it's harddrive in teh hopes that the DVD would see the 4gig USB... no luck there.
