As for "root", "root" is the typically the name of the user with absolute, supreme power on a Linux system (and many other Unix-derived OSs). It's a good idea to spend most of the time logged in as normal user instead, so that it harder to break the system inadvertently.
By default, Ubuntu sets up the first/primary user with full "sudo" (superuser do) privileges, so he/she can promote themselves to root when needed to administer the system.
As for connecting to the network via a wire. Connect the wire and wait a moment. I think the system should pop up a notification of the connection. If you don't see a notification, try running "ping -c 4 google.com" in a terminal window to run a simple test (connecting to Google). Did it work?
