The root account is LOCKED by default in Ubuntu. In other words, Ubuntu should never ask you for a root password.

This is a must-read for new Ubuntu users: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RootSudo

Hope that helps!

What are you booting off? A USB drive with Ubuntu installed to it? Or a USB drive with the Ubuntu LiveCD copied to it?

Any password on the LiveCD should be blank. If you actually installed full Ubuntu to a USB drive, then you had to pick a user password at some point. If you don't know the password, note the user name, then reboot into recovery mode and change the password with "passwd username.
