Default Video Players don't work as expected - 02-24-2010, 09:11 PM

I am using a Mini 9 with 2 GB RAM and the latest version of UBUNTU Linux.
I found out that videos are not played as they should. Sometimes the picture freezes or some frames are skipped. The same problem is monitored with Firefox or Chrome on youtube.com or downloaded movie files (wmf, divx). First I thougt this only occures with videostreams from internet. But there is no difference between downloaded or streamed movies.

The sound is OK but the video is not perfect.

What's the problem or reason?

Is the CPU power to low or is this a LINUX problem?
Is it better to install Win 7 on the Mini 9?

The Flash plugin is responsible for playing most videos in web browsers, and it has poor performance, especially on Linux. On my Mini 9, I download Flash vids and play them with Mplayer.

As for playing videos outside of a web browser, are you using Totem? I think that's the default video player of the Gnome desktop used in Ubuntu. Since Totem relies on Gstreamer codecs, you can try installing the ffmpeg gstreamer plugin, it may improve performance for the codecs it can handle (virtually all of them ).

Or try using a different video player, I recommend VLC or Mplayer. Personally, I use Mplayer on my Mini 9 with excellent results (DVD resolution videos are perfect, while HD is marginal/choppy).

To install the software I mentioned, search for it in the Synaptic package manager program, or run apt-get in a terminal: "sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg", "sudo apt-get install vlc", or "sudo apt-get install mplayer".

Mplayer along with 2GB of ram and tmpfs will get you playback that's pretty awesome.
