My dell mini 10v's wifi support on ubuntu (9.10 UNR) is absolutely pathetic. It sometimes works, other times it cannot ever connect to known networks. With 9.0.4 rebooting would always fix it, but after upgrading to 9.10 it's gotten worse, the only thing that seems to fix it is either giving up and trying again tomorrow, or using synaptic to completely uninstall the network manager and reinstall it.

Symptoms:

- asking for the password 5 times in a row for an already configured network
- trying, then refusing to connect to previously working and configured network
- dimmed out 'connect' button in the 'connect to hidden network' panel
- sometimes it just works fine

This is really driving me crazy, as my brand new netbook has become a paperweight. I'm this close to installing windows 7 because I think this is most likely a software issue.

FWIW I opted for top end WIFI card from dell when I bought it. If anyone could help me troubleshoot or fix this I would really appreciate any advice.

If it's a dell 1510 try channel 11 on your router...

You could try WICD. I think it just works better.
It seems to have more options to control your connections, wired or wifi.
There is a newer version for ubuntu 9.10
Use synaptic to install it. Synaptic will uninstall "network manager" during this process.
During the install of WICD, you may get an error message similar to this:
"a resource cannot be found".
This is because the network manager is no longer connected because it's being uninstalled.
Reboot and all will be fine.
That is how it has worked for me in 3 different Ubuntu and one Debian distros.

sorry I should have mentioned I did try WICD, I saw it on some oother threads... I didn't have a lot of time to get into it at the time & it did not seem much better but I'll try it again.
