Default Password issue after reinstalling Ubuntu - 11-29-2009, 05:16 AM

I recently reinstalled Ubuntu and put in a new SSD on my Mini 9. Since then it has been running fine.

I see now that there are several updates available. When I go to install them, however, I am prompted for a password. When I first purchased the system I was required to set up a user name and password. After the reinstall though I was never prompted to set anything up like that.

I have read about going into the terminal (I think) and using something called "sudo" to set a new user name and password but I don't know if that is what I need to do or not? Or is there something else I should try?

Thanks for the help folks, I am a COMPLETE newbie with this Linux stuff.

To override your user password:

First, note your exact username. If you're not sure, you can run "whoami" in a terminal to list it. It should just list "beetlebooster" or "george" or whatever.

Then, reboot into Recovery Mode. At the terminal prompt, execute "passwd username" (substitute appropriately). Then enter the password you'd like to have.

Finally, you can execute "shutdown -r now" to reboot, or just tap the power button and let it turn off.
