Default Problems installing UNR on my Mini 10v - 11-19-2009, 06:11 PM

So yesterday I received a refurbished Mini 10v pre-installed with XP Home. I played around XP Home it works fine. I also want to install UNR and dual boot the system. I followed instructions and re-sized the partition, however I could not get the swap partition as Dell has 2 partitions (one XP restore and another Dell partition) as there could be a maximum of 4 primary partitions. So I created a 32 gig UNR partition and just put the swap file for Linux on the same partition as UNR.

The bigger issues with the UNR are:
1. UNR is indicating that the hard drive is about the fail (bad sectors) according to it. Now in XP everything works fine, there are no funny sounds, I ran both chkdsk and also an independent hard drive diagnostic utility that checked sector by sector and found no errors in Windows. This leads me to believe there is some probably with Ubuntu and the hard drive driver.

2. UNR - Wifi Driver does not work. I downloaded UNR 9.10 off the Ubuntu site and installed using the USB stick.

Any help is appreciated.

1. The new hard drive monitor seems really picky/buggy. I hate to say it, but you can probably ignore it's warnings.

2. 9.10 Release Notes | Ubuntu

Mini 9 | Intel 5100 Wifi | Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook
Mini 1012 | SSD | Intel 6200 Wifi | Ubuntu 11.10 64bit

Did you follow THESE instructions?
Easy fix:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get --reinstall install bcmwl-kernel-source

I installed Karmic UNR, plugged into a wired network, two commands later and wireless was working perfectly.

His: Obsidian Mini-9: Karmic UNR w/ Vbox-XP, 2gb, 32gb STEC, 16gb Transcend(6), US-INTL, sgpstore carbon
Hers: Arctic Mini-9: Dell Ubuntu, 1gb, 16gb STEC, 8gb SDHC(6)
