I think I can solve some of your Flash/Java problems. The best way to install flash and Java is from the Medibuntu repositories. This works for 9.04 and 9.10. Open terminal type in the following;

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list \
 --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list &&
sudo apt-get -q update &&
sudo apt-get --yes -q --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring &&
sudo apt-get -q update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras w32codecs flashplugin-nonfree sun-java6-fonts sun-java6-jre \
sun-java6-plugin libdvdcss2 libdvdnav4 msttcorefonts
As for 9.10, it is probably a good idea to give it a week or two and let Cannonical fix some of the bugs.

you can also add medibuntu from the program ubuntu tweak which allows you to add a lot of 3rd party repositories. good if you have bash phobia
