Default Dell Mini 10v/Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 - Kernel panic not syncing VFS unable to moun - 10-21-2009, 07:39 AM

Hi,

I have bought Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 on a USB stick.
The live
installation works just perfect.

When installing Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 on the machine I get
'halt:unable to iterate IDE devices: No such files
or directory'
and the machine powers down.

When running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 in diagnostic mode I eventually
get the message 'Kernel panic not syncing VFS unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,2)'.

As far as I understand this means that the kernel cannot find the hard
disk's device driver and, thus, cannot mount the filesystem. Is that
correct?

Can I solve the problem by doing something (what?) with the entries
in /boot/grub/menu.lst?

Thanks and regards.
Paul

I have a couple ideas.

Current versions of Ubuntu use UUID values to identify drives. Off the Live CD, run "sudo vol_id /dev/sda1" and confirm that it's UUID value matches the appropriate spots in "/boot/grub/menu.lst" and "/etc/fstab". I'm assuming you installed to the first partition on drive A, so I used "/dev/sda1", you may need to change it to match your config.

It could be a hardware problem with the drive. Try running a "fsck" on the installed partition and see if it's clean.

Good luck.

Default UUIDs match/fsck OK - 10-21-2009, 11:49 AM

Hi reflex,

Thanks for your message.

The UUID entry output by vol_id matches the entries under UUID and kernel in /media/disk/boot/grup/menu.lst.

fsck says disk is OK.

Too bad.

Best Regards.

P.S.

It says root (hd0,0) in /media/disk/boot/grup/menu.lst.
Is that correct?

Default Problem solved .... - 10-27-2009, 11:31 AM

The problem got solved by deleting /etc/init.d/login. Although the root filesystem had got mounted the error message (kernel panic...) was still issued by mistake.
