For a normal data DVD or CD both XP and 9.04 recognize the drive and its contents. 9.04 puts a icon on the desktop that you can open to see or run the contents. If there is no DVD or CD in the drive 9.04 does not show the drive at all. fdalbor

Thanks everyone for the lead on video codecs. I found this site (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu), and followed the instructions. It involves using the command line, but I found that I could cut and paste the code. Works great! Now I can play commercial dvds without a problem.
BTW, be sure to bookmark the page, as any updates will wipe out this code, and you will have to re-install it.
