Default 720P MKV Playback with Ubuntu - 11-28-2008, 12:09 AM

I know the Mini isn't advertised to be an HD video player, but it would be a plus if it could. I already reviewed this thread:

But no one mentioned using Ubuntu which I believe is less resource intensive than Windows.

I get my HD movies from here:

They are mostly 720p x264 video and aac audio in an mkv container. I'm planning on using Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex with VLC to play these files on the Mini over my LAN and off a 32GB USB flash drive like this one: http://bit.ly/EhTX

Also, some people have an HD TV with a 15-pin VGA video connector. What is the highest resolution that can be outputted from the mini? I'm hoping it is at least 1280x720.

If anyone has tested 720p mkv video using Ubuntu and VLC connected to an HDTV, it would be great to hear about your experience and any tweaks like using Xubuntu instead or how much RAM is needed. Thanks!
