I'm not really clear where you are.........

Are you in the Mac System Preferences > Displays?
And when you click on detect display, do you get a picture of two screens?
At that point you want to click and drag the task bar from one screen to the other to make the external one the primary one.

If it doesn't work, shut everything down and try again - fully boot up on OS X and then plug in the VGA cable.

In general. if this works or doesn't will depend on two basic factors I think - one is the way you installed OS X on the Mini 10V - I created my boot USB using a Mac Mini; I assume if you use a PC the results may be different; and the second factor is the external monitor/TV you are connecting to. Initially I thought I had to adjust the resolution of the external LCD TV but there is really no way to do that on mine with the VGA input. Turns out that the adjustment happened automatically when I selected "Detect Displays".

Which particular model Philips LCD TV do you have?

As I mentioned in my earlier reply:

I haven't connected the Mini to my LCD TV for a while -I'll try it again later today and will keep a ste-by-step record.
Maybe there is something additional that I do automatically that I forgot to mention.

I tried hooking up my Mini 10v to the LCD TV again just now - learned a little bit more.

(This is extremely annoying on this forum software that all my posts get rolled into one - is there any way around that?)

For one, the displays act as 'dual displays' automatically, so the dock which I keep hidden on the left of the screen is actually on the Mini display and the cursor (either trackpad or mouse) will travel from the Mini display to the LCD display.
Not much good as a dual display since one is 10 inches and the other 32.

Also, booting up with the VGA connection plugged into the VGA port on the Mini will not work - I get the display background on the Mini but nothing else - the LCD display stays dark.

So what did work for me was the following:

Plug VGA Cable into VGA port of LCD display
Turn on the LCD TV
Set input on TV to VGA

Boot up the Mini (no VGA cable connected!)
Once fully booted, plug VGA cable (already connected to VGA port on LCD display) into VGA port on Mini

At this point:
a. The Mini screen changes aspect ratio to something closer to 4:3 (didn't measure it - not important and the Mini display shows only the background selected - no hard drive icon or folders.
However, the cursor is there and can be moved and the dock is there as well.
b. At the same time (when the VGA cable is plugged into the Mini VGA port), the LCD TV shows the normal OS X screen, the background and the hard drive icon and all folders you had on the desktop and the taskbar at the top.
If I keep moving the cursor to the right on the Mini screen it will disappear off the right edge of the Mini screen and appear on the left edge of the LCD TV screen.

If I go into System Preferences > Display on the LCD screen (there is no taskbar on the Mini screen), I now have three options:
Display - Arrangement - Color (Before on the Mini before plugging in the VGA cable I only had the first and last option.
If I select 'Arrangement' I get the two screens representing the Mini and the LCD screen and I can drag the task bar to either one.
On that screen I also get the option to mirror displays - Do not click that and enable it!
When I check the resolution it shows 1360 x 768 which I assume is the normal resolution of the LCD TV with the VGA input.

Hi guys.

Today I tried to connect my little fella to LCD projector. The process was casual...boot up the OSX, turn on the projector, put the vga cable to projector and then to my 10v. I just couldn't belive, what happened. Without any interventions, the screen resolution on my dell chenged to 800x600 (black sides) and there was mirrored picture in 1024x768 on LCD projector. After I unpluged VGA cable, the resolution automaticly changed back to 1024x600.

So I guess with this projector (Epson EMP-X3L) it works, as it is supposed to.

Best regards

Interesting that 'mirroring' works in your case and so far everybody else has major problems when they turn mirroring on.
I'm guessing that is because your projectors native horizontal resolution is the same as the 10v whereas for most people that horizontal resolution on the external display is larger, 1360 x 768 in my case.
The smallest monitor I have is a 17-inch one with a native resolution of 1280 x 1024, so I can't even test my theory.

Hey,

tried today with LCD projector, which's native resolution is 1280x1024, but is also capable of lower resolutions. It worked like a charm...the resolution on projector changed to 1024x768 nad on my dell to 800x600.

Best regards

Skipper -
Did you download any additional software to the 10v that relates to mirroring or displays?
I bought a projector a couple of days ago with native 800x600 resolution and can't get a picture using the projector at all.
I used the projector with a MacBook Pro and it works perfectly so the projector and the VGA cable is fine - just can't get it to work with the Mini at all.

Exclamation Maybe this FREE App will help? - 01-02-2011, 05:41 PM

I just read through this thread. When I first got my Mini 10v w/MacOS 10.6.4, I downloaded every free app i thought I might be able to use. I stumbled onto one called "MirrorDisplays" from Fabian Canas. I tried it, it works. This note is from his site:

"Note to Hackintosh Users
This is program is essential if you run OS X on an MSI Wind, Dell Mini, and a few other hacked netbooks as it helps get around a screen corruption issue when plugging in an external display."

Download here:

Mirror Displays

All the best,

Jeff

Thanks Jeff,

I had seen that application before but never downloaded it.
Based on your comments, I finally did but I can figure out how to use it - is it not supposed to allow you to turn mirroring on and off without going through the normal system pref > etc routine.
the first few times after I downloaded the application and dragged it into my apps folder, I still got the vertical lines, but then, after about the fifth time of plugging in the VGA cable, things suddenly worked.
Very strange - I don't get mirroring; I get the desktop projected on the screen and the display on the Dell is just blue.

What still drives me nuts on the Dell is the touchpad - it's essentially unusable.

Actually the simplest method is through Terminal to turn off mirror display

1. Start a Terminal.
2. Type /Extra/bin/mirroring off ...... BUT do not hit Enter yet.
3. Plug in the external display. Both monitors will show corrupted image.
4. Hit Enter to execute the command you typed above.
5. Your display should return to normal.

Do you understand what actually happening on the Dell?
I don't need mirroring at all, so it's off permanently for me.
When I use a MacBook Pro with the projector everything works as it should, I don't quite understand why this seems to so flakey on the Dell.
Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.
