Default run OS X from external HD. possible? - 04-26-2009, 01:27 PM

hi!

super noob and an OS X virgin! have an A90 ordered and is on its way to me.

questions:

* is it possible to install OS X on an external harddrive and boot from there to use OS X, while retaining XP on the internal SSD? am trying to learn OS X and in that way, if i mess it up, it wont do no harm to XP on the SSD. that's practically my concern against dual-booting as i might mess up both partitions. :-(

thoughts?

i've bought one of these to expedite my learning:

* any advice from all you OS X experts on the best way to learn the OS?

TIA for your inputs!

I was a complete Mac virgin until about a week ago. I even installed XP in a virtual machine as I was worried I would miss Windows.

In the last 8 days I've come to love OS X and I am getting to the point where I don't really miss XP and could easily live without it. I have toyed with setting up a dual boot but as time goes on I feel the need less and less.

I have written a huge long post here all about my experiences with the mini - feel free to skip the first page or so as I talk about the hardware and Linux:

I'm not sure how you install OS X to an external drive without messing up your Windows installation so I'll leave it to someone more knowledgeable than me to take over

It is possible. I ran it before when I was first installing mac on the mini 9. I had to slim it down to fit on my friends 8GB drive. The only problem is that I forgot how to do it. I still have the OS installed on my external hard drive. I remember someone saying that you also need to have Chameleon Boot Loader installed with it or something like that. Maybe someone else could shed some light on this.

Haha. Speak of the devil. As soon as I posted this reply I see a new topic on the same thing.

I left a second "blank" partition especially for this purpose

it works even as replacement for BootMini 123 and laters

It's exactly the same as a regular installation, just make sure you have your external usb drive plugged in. When you get to the installation screen, you'll see your external drive as a yellow/orangish icon with a usb symbol. Format/partition it with disk util the same way you would for an internal drive and just tell Leopard to install onto the external drive.
