Guide: Mini 10 Touchpad into Mini 10v

Default Guide: Mini 10 Touchpad into Mini 10v

Thought I'd start a new thread as it might be a bit better to link to or move to the guides section if all the info is in one place

The part I ordered is this one (UK)
Manufacturer Part Number: X604K
UO Part no.: T009322
Description: ASSY,PLMRST,PLSTC,IMR,SLVR1010

and got it from this number given to me by Dell:
Upgrade Options - 08712311924

It took about a week to arrive and cost £24.49 ex VAT & delivery
£37.37 inc VAT and delivery

P.S. you'll need to do a bit of modding and swap the new touchpad to the plastic surround of the original one and the Mini 10 surround is slightly larger.

If you want to see higher res images for any of the below pics just look at the image address and add a "h" to the end of the filename i.e. IMG_0418h.jpg

Side by side of the 10 and 10v touchpad. 10 is the one too the right, as you can see the touchpad surround has slightly different fittings and is very slightly larger than the 10v so you need to swap the actual touchpad into the original 10v surround.

Close up of the differences.

Here are the mod's I needed to make to the 10v touchpad surround to make it fit.

Used a small pair of wire cutters to snip out a small bit of plastic either side of the touchpad.

Then also cut out a small bit of the corner of each side of the mini 10 touchpad so that it would fit round where the mini 10v one screws in.

I then also needed to snip off 2 extra small bits of metal that stuck out from the touchpad as they didn't quite fit into how the mini 10v surround holds the touchpad.

I then used a bit of silicon to hold down the one side of the touchpad as it didn't feel quite as solid as it should and seemed to move away from the touchpad slightly.

Please note I used the ribbon cable that was from the 10v as the one that comes with the mini 10 touchpad does not reach. I also broke one of the small clips on the actual case of the laptop that hold the touchpad down so the touchpad is ever so slighly raised at the moment but I intend to glue this down. I think this was done when I was originally trying to get the mini 10 surround to fit before I realised the size was slightly different.

DeanJ. I moved your thread and made it a guide.

Good work!! If you could edit the original post and include all information in that post then things would be more organized. Right now, your pictures are showing up in the "comments".

I can help clean this up for you if you would like.

Since I "promoted" your thread to a Guide it becomes an "article". This lifts a lot of those restrictions and allows you to post your entire guide without having to use overflow posts to include all of your information

Thanks for the guide! I am sure it will be a great help.

Just a FYI for any US types that would want to try this. If you need to add silicon like the OP you can purchase it at pretty much any big box hardware store (Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) or Walmart. Look for clear bathtub silicon caulk in a 8" plastic tube in the plumbing section (for hw store) or hardware (for gp store). Should cost around 5 bucks. Smaller mom and pop hardware stores would most likely have it also for maybe a buck more.

What advantages does the Mini 10 trackpad have over the Mini 10v trackpad? i.e. why would you want to do this upgrade?

It's pretty much better in every way to the mini10v's trackpad. Since this pad is multitouch it no longer suffers from the jumpiness when using the built in buttons. This allows you to to hold the button, drag your finger across the pad and have it act as expected. This simple behavior is the source of much frustration on the mini10v.

Other than that, tap to click is now 100% reliable (which has been an issue with netbook installer's drivers). Two finger scrolling works beautifully, two finger clicking seems to trigger a middle click on a mouse and three finger clicking works as right click.

The only down side is that the trackpad is very sensitive at the default settings, but OSx seems to recognize this trackpad as a mouse and not a trackpad and as such you can adjust the speed settings under the 'mouse' tab in system preferences.

I highly recommend this upgrade. The silicone used in the original post isn't necessary as there is a little plastic clip which holds the top of the trackpad. I know I had some reservations about using such a hackish method.

Default Updated my 10v touchpad today...

I have done the upgrade as well but did not require any silicon to hold it in place. If your very careful you can bend the metal on the front of the touch pad up and then back flat so you can use the screws to actually hold it down. When I get home tonight I will take some pictures since I did this in the office this morning when I came in. Took about 15 minutes and that includes tracking down some pliers to do the bending.

Touchpad works great have clean 2 finger scrolling and light touch just like my MacBook Pro. Now if I just had 4 finger scrolling I would be in hog heaven.
