Hi Rudie,
As the system was lying idle for more than a year the batter might have to be replaced. Before getting the new battery, please make sure that the charger is enabled in the BIOS. The steps are:
1. Restart the system and tap F2 on the Dell logo.
2. Click on the Advanced tab and make sure the Charger behavior is set to charger enabled.
You can also try to reset the BIOS to defaults by pressing the F9 on the BIOS screen and then press F10 to save and exit.
If you are using Windows 7 with the system, you can use the battery health meter to check the status of the battery. The steps to check the battery health meter are as follows.
1. Press Windows key and X together.
2. Check the battery health in the Windows Mobility Center.
Hope this helps. Please reply for any further questions.
Thanks and regards
Abhishek B
