Cool Windows 8 on mini - 11-11-2012, 04:31 AM

Basically I'm having sound problem (as in no sound at all) since my upgrade to windows 8. Also, I find that VLC does not play well.

What were you running before? Does Device Manager show a "working" audio device? Sure it's not muted? I never found that video of any kind did well on the Mini 9.

Default Thanks for reply - 11-11-2012, 07:31 AM

Thanks a lot for your reply!

I was running xp. No sound and crappy vlc experience for me right now with green screens and all. Device manager seems ok. I'm running some windows updates right now. We'll see if that rights the sound issue.

We have the same mini 9 configuration btw.

And no, it's not muted!

Turns out that vlc is no longer crappy with the windows 8 updates! Yes! But no sound...

Ok final message: I transfered my documentary film to the ipad and the quality of sound and image is so superior, I will just forget about trying to get sound on the mini 9 for now.

I also tried win 8 and removed it in 5 min - the display would not work in tiles as it wants 1024 x 768 not happy with 1024 x 600.

The tiled interface makes no sense without a touchscreen. I installed Start8 and never go there. But then you may as well stick with Win7.

I don't find OS X boots any quicker than Win7. But both are fast. Win8 boots a bit quicker still.

I hated win 8 so much that I only used it for 5 min, so can't comment - but I still fell OSX has the edge over win 7 maybe its just the drop away dock I prefer providing a larger working desktop. Anyway the poor minis hardly get used any more time has moved on. Still I have two working units although the batteries are getting stuffed good units these were.

I do hate the tiled "interface formerly known as Metro" if I don't have a touchscreen. That's why I always use the desktop. That way, it's really very much like Win7, with some subtle improvements.

You can make the taskbar drop away in Win7/8 just like OS X. Even XP had that. Unlike OS X, the Windows taskbar isn't crammed full with icons for every program that comes with Windows.

I use the desktop of Win 8 as well, and everything works fine.
