Default 2012 Linux Distros - 06-15-2012, 05:46 AM

I have been trying the latest Linux distros on my trusty Mini 9 (16GB ssd, 2 GB ram). I started with Linux again after trying Windows 8. Same old problem with Windows...get a bigger SSD or die.
I installed the latest Chrome Lime from Hexxah. It functioned pretty well but the Mini 9 hardware is just a little bit off. I didn't like the screen resolution and no sound.
I tried Xubuntu 12.04. Although it looked pretty good and handled my screen resolution OK it has a serious problem with the Software Manager that refuses to run on the Mini 9 and two of my desktops.
LinuxMint looked really good but it doesn't like my big monitor that has a 1680x1050 default resolution. In fact it would not even recognize that a monitor existed.
Vectorlinux??? A geeks nightmare to install compared to all the rest.
Lubuntu 12.04 is the best of the bunch so far on the Mini 9.
Zorin OS 6 Lite is next if it ever gets done downloading.

I'm not sure what you want to do with your Mini 9 but my OS works great for me. Keep trying until you find a version that does what you need. It is nice to have an OS that works on a 4 GB SSD.

I think that you would like Win 7 if you wanted to buy an OS & a large SSD.

Default Ubuntu Unity - 10-28-2012, 01:39 PM

I kicked Mac OS X (snow leopard) and Win 7 off my mini 9 and installed Ubuntu 12.10. The mini runs much faster, all the hardware is supported so much better. It's like the mini 9 and Ubuntu were made for each other.

I had Linux Mint Lisa on the Mini 9 for a while and it was running very well. I thought that maybe the newest version would be even better (Linux Mint Maya) and I hate to say it but it's not. It looks nice, but definitely slower, especially when waking up from sleep; the wifi takes much longer to connect.

I'm gonna reformat the Mini 9 back to Linux Mint Lisa. I tried Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) on it, and gave it my best effort to like Unity desktop, but besides being slower (than Linux Mint Lisa), Unity was not my thing. I installed xfce desktop on top of Ubuntu 12.04 but there were "broken" stuff that I just gave up on it and went back to Linux Mint (Maya)

Come to think of it, Linux Mint Maya's "slowness" on the Mini 9 may be related to it sharing the Ubuntu 12.04 kernel.

It looks like Ubuntu Quantal Quetzal still has the Unity desktop so I guess I won't be loading that on the Mini 9.

I'm still stuck on the Linux Mint Lisa on the Dell 11z (1121). Too lazy to back everything up and reformat. Hopefully in a month or two .....

Where should one start to get Ubuntu on a Mini9? Should I just try tolet my original Ubuntu install upgrade itself (8.04?) or download 12.04 fresh? There used to be different repositories for Dell vs. netbooks vs "regular" computers - is that still the case?

The netbook version is no longer, only a server & desktop. You will want 12.04 , 32 bit which I can not load due to my SSD size. I suggest that you load it on to a USB flash drive & take it for a test drive. I have 12.04 on my desktop & my wife's desktop which runs without a problem. 12.10 has been released but I have not tried it.

Skip 8.04, it still works but is no longer supported. I have never thought about reloading it.

Try Linux Mint Debian Edition. It really shines on the Mini 9 with compiz enabled. And there's a guide on this forum on how to get everything working.

Only issue I've had with it so far is the sdcard giving me trouble when I suspend the system. But I'm sure there must be some kind of workaround.
