Default Jolicloud 1.1 over Ubuntu - 02-14-2011, 10:54 PM

I had been running Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook remix and had not been enjoying it as much as 10.04. The Unity interface was slow and not great to work with. I was looking at MeeGo, other Linux version, and stumbled over Jolicloud. I wasn't keen on cloud based computing (call me old fashioned), but it really impressed me. It runs faster than Ubuntu (even though underneath Jolicloud runs on Ubuntu). It is fast, smooth, and was trouble free to setup. I have a Mini 1012 as my main Win7 netbook, so living in the cloud hasn't been the pain I was expecting. I just keep my files synced with the nice Dropbox client and my data is where I need it! It even gave me better battery life.

If you are looking to try a different OS, give Jolicloud 1.1 a try. The liveCD makes it easy to play with.

It even has a LiveUSB function so you can try it out just by installing it on a USB drive and booting from the USB drive. Very impressive for a simplistic OS. I think the largest flaw is the lack of offline use. From my understanding, you MUST login to use JoliCloud, which means if your working with your files without a connection often you might be better with something like Ubuntu. However, if you have internet 24/7 that ain't a problem.

Not true. Internet IS needed to install, however.

From Jolicloud Help Center : How do I use Jolicloud for the first time? :

You need an Internet connection only the first time. Then, you can use Jolicloud even if you're not connected to the Internet.
I am loving jolicloud on my Dell Mini 1012. We don't have to use it strictly a cloud computer: it has My Documents like any other OS and we add easily install openoffice, etc from the jolicloud app center. Dropbox can be used to sync files also.
Cheers

You can use it offline just fine. I have Openoffice and my files offline. Most of the "apps" are unavailable offline as they are mostly weblinks or rely on the web to work. But really, when will you be without an internet connection these days?
