It wasn't until I got the new DB that I realised the holes were wrong, so after contacting Dell again and finding that a different motherboard would be another £80 I decided to be brave and follow Pixars instructions. £60 is still expensive for a 1GB upgrade, but much better than £140. For some reason I have to send back my original DB to Dell, but then it isn't much use to me. Very relieved when my mini booted and found the new memory, thanks Pixar!

so have you a part number for the 2gb upgrade. ive been watching this thread for sometime now and its either a diy upgrade or getting rid of my mini 10 with gps and tv

It is Item number 682-19817

And of course over two hours of phone calls to convince Dell that they do want to sell me the DB (I had been on the phone so long that I wasn't going to give in!). The item number on the invoice is 682-19817.

sure just reformat the drive and load XP or Win 7 and you are all set.....but I dont think that you could have gotten all the other options either....I think I would rather have the other options

by the way they dont recognize that number when you call or chat on line, the number you must use is "R031P" the other number may be on the invoice but you cant order it, when I gave them the "R" number they found it..but like I said up above $554 is WAY too much..

Hello all,

I love my Inspiron Mini 1010 its looks gorgeous on a giant HDMI TV and is great for sharing anime in the dorms. Or at least it would be if I could get my favorite movie files to stop skipping. ;o

I've read all the previous comments yet am still a bit confused and have some questions. (is somewhat computer illiterate)

I have the 30gig SSD with HDMI port option with no GPS whatevers.

Is it really impossible to upgrade the 1010 to 2 gigs of ram?

Would it make even the slightest difference in my systems potential to watch videos properly? (has all the right codecs)

Also would any one be able to enlighten me as to what portion of a computer's system limits the maximum capacity of ram card they can use?

is it a useless venture to be attempting to play near dvd/partial blueray quality videos on these systems?

I dont have much time for gaming and really just want to be able to watch movies.

I was incredibly tempted into upgrading to a mini 1012 but became disheartened when i saw that they don't feature an HDMI port.

I have a recent full sized desktop at home but will be very far away from it for the next 4 months+. I adore the mini's for their small size and portability but the darn things always seem to be inheriently flawed in one area or another that stops them from being truly perfect.

Sigh i wish I could just fit a stronger systems coponents into the mini chasis and be done with it.

I think it would feel like defeating the purpose to just give up and upgrade to a larger sized laptop.

;c

@Paladin777....the memory and the processor on the 1010 is soldered onto the daughter board, now the daughter board IS replaceable but Dell wont sell them....I have been after one for months....I got a Dell guy to almost sell me a refurbed one until he told me it would be $554, that ended the conversation, now with the 1012 out, I dont know if Dell will ever sell the daughter board although it would speed up the video quite a bit, it was originally MS that limited the 1010 to 1gb with XP also I think that the GMA500 graphics is limited to 2gb, Dell did sell the 1010 with 2gbs available with ubuntu on it, I am hoping to find someone selling theirs for parts oneday maybe with a cracked screen or something and just grab the daughter board..but nothing yet.....hope this helps ya

PS. Welcome to the forum...

Sell your Mini 10 and get an 11z from the outlet - it is much faster and not much bigger or heavier and has HDMI output and a much better graphics chip.
