Default Hackintosh vs Mackbook Air - 11-02-2011, 09:52 AM

Hi - apologies if this has already been discussed. I did do a quick search but just found the main MB Air thread. I've had my Hackintosh for over 2 years now and it's been excellent. Travelled the world with me, can throw it into my backpack, I haven't updated it beyond 10.6.2 (and neither do I care to), and it's been great.

So great that I find it's become my main machine now. My (2007) MBP is now hardly used. I don't do very much with my machines, no mass video editing, no Photoshop. Just web browsing, iTunes, watching video files. The Hackintosh has coped relatively well enough, but it struggles when I really push it (as expected), particularly with web browsing. So I'm thinking of getting a MB Air now. Has anyone made the switch?

I love how portable and durable the Dell is. Travels everywhere with me, but would just like it to have a bit more juice. Other than the obvious issue of cost (which I'm not *too* fussed about), any obvious yay or nay to switching?

Thanks!

I love my mini, but it is a bit long in tooth. I find myself wishing it could readily watch Netflix, it's my only gripe personally. If I just wanted a small laptop to use for internet and stuff, rather than doing CAD work or rendering stuff. I'd readily make the switch should my Mini die and I knew I'd need a small portable one with good battery life. I'd also be constantly entertained by the size of it.

My 10V is still chugging away after 2 1/2 years at 10.5.8 and I'm still happy with it. It handle everything I need to do short of AutoCAD (which I have on my MacPro). I'm toying with the idea of the next generation of iPad (when it come out) as a replacement. I suspect I'll be able to find the apps available to do everything my 10V can do.
The Air looks great, but I'm not sure i want to spend that kind of bucks for it.

Dell Mini 10v - Bios A05 - 1.6 ghz Intel Atom - 160 GB HD - 1 GB RAM - wifi + bluetooth - OSX Leopard 10.5.8
Mac Pro - 2x2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel - 8GB RAM - 2x320 GB HD - 1x500GB HD - NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT - OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.5

I have a dual boot 10v running SL 10.6.7/XP-SP3 and a MBA 11" w/120GB ssd (2010 model). I ran Windows 7 in Boot Camp a while but the server I need to log in on finally switched to a Citrex interface and OS X works well so I deleted the W7 for more HD space. I find the MBA to be much faster and more useful than the 10v for triple the cost. No complaints about the 10v for web browsing and email but the single core 32 bit processor and limited RAM finally made the difference in photo editing, compatibility, etc. Apple is good at making us want their latest and greatest and I would be happier with the 2011 model with faster processor and lighted keys but I like the one I have. No complaints for MBA or 10v when used within their limits.

I have a 2010 mb air that was last years gift and like it alot- the new ones come w/ Lion which takes time getting used to- adding RAM 2 GB to your Dell will make a big difference for a fraction of the cost- For what you do, you could also think about a new i-pad with a wireless keyboard- let us know what you decide
