Default Wireless Fail - 07-21-2011, 05:34 AM

I just bought a mini 1018 to wirelessly stream music at my work station from the company router. It was a little more expensive than buying an iPod touch (I already have an iPhone 4 and don't need another pocket toy) and it would do more things. The problem is, it isn't working.

When I'm connected to the network it says the signal strength is "excellent" (Bill and Ted flashback) but it says I have no internet access. This is evident as I try and fail to use iTunes to listen to internet radio and just about anything else web related.

It seems I have access intermittently at best. When the Mini fails my iPhone succeeds so I know it's not the source. Also, I tested it out at home too and it's the same. Anybody else encounter this and can point me to a solution? Thanks and nice to meet you all.

It may be a compatibility problem between the wireless card in the Mini and your router. When I first bought my Mini 9 I had similar issues, which went away when I replaced the router. Try the Mini at some WiFi hotspots and see if it consistently works there or fails there.

When the Mini says "no Internet access" that means it is not getting through your router. Check the router's status pages to see if the Mini shows as associated and being given an IP.

I had issues connecting while running on batteries, after some research it turns out that the realtech wireless card has a bug that corrupts 'packets' (the information sent from the laptop to the router and vice-versa) when in power save mode.

The solution is to change your performance settings in the power options screen of device manager. Start > Control Panel > power options > Select high performance...

...and if that is the problem you should have no more trouble. Your battery life will reduce slightly but I haven't notice much difference in battery life.

Thanks all, good information. Turns out it was a double whammy. I was trying to use it at home and at work and both of these places had their own problems so it was nothing to do with the mini. At work the modem was failing and at home I was to ignorant to know how to interface it. LOL All better now.

I have an XPS 420 desktop, a Studio XPS 1645 and just now this Mini and I think I'm going to use the hell out of the Mini more than anything. It's brand new though so I haven't had it out and about battery free, thanks for the info on that 50p and thank you holmes4 for the heads up on router connectivity. I think if I'd tried it out at more locations I would have realized the puter was fine.

Yay, glad you got it sorted and also pleased it wasn't the mini, nothing worse than the disappointment of getting something new and not performing out of the box.

I was unsure of my purchase but the mini has grown and grown on me
