Dell Streak opinions:
I've recently got a hold of this device. It is great one, great job Dell!
I am not referring to the paper technical details but to the actual hands on experience, maybe there are some better ones in terms of technical specifications.
Pros:
+great form factor/display size
+processor (which is a little bit to fast, I would choose more memory over proc.power)
+memory +screen
+battery life, but only if you are careful with the power management (screen timeout, running apps, running services (Bluetooth, wifi, gps). I am only referring to the updated android 2.2 version. +workmanship of the device. The device is well made, good materials, well assembled. The details do matter and Dell chose a 1530mAh Lithium Polymer battery type, the best type there is. It is made by a Japanese company and only assembled in China. Compared to the other cell phone batteries Dell went out of their way in order to provide their device with a quality battery (more mAh would be better). The used materials for the manufacturing and the technical specs of the battery they all say quality. I guess at the other end of what Dell offers is Motorola with the worst batteries I’ve seen. It’s also very important to distinguish in between the issues caused by the operating system and the ones caused by the cell phone manufacturer. The Os itself doesn’t come with to much software loaded on it and I really appreciate Dell for choosing this.
Cons:
-power button functions
if you are talking and the screen turns off ( due to the short light time out period to save battery life) by pressing the power button to return the screen from stand by will also end the active call ( this is what happened to me while I had a talk with my cell phone’s network provider after waiting in the queue to speak with them. I’ve tried to turn on the screen to access the settings according to the instructions given the support, to set up the Internet access on it, and guess what, it ended my active call. The sideways touch sensitive buttons don’t turn the screen on either, only the power button has this function. Dell please address this as it seriously affects the battery life ( because I need to put a no light time out period in order to keep the screen lit. the power button function seriously affects the way the phone calls are being handled as well !
- touch sensitive buttons on the side are no so touch sensitive. I am disappointed with the sideways touch sensitive buttons that require repetitive and more powerful presses. I guess this is again related to the screen standby mode so it could be more of a software issue. Probably some real hardware buttons will be better.
- display coating. the display could use a better, dry fingers friendly coating. Sometimes I feel my fingers burning because of the grip they have on the screen, it’s not something major but that could be improved on the next generation of Streaks.
- battery cover dependability for keeping the device on, the way the device turns itself off when you take the cover of the battery. Eg. Because of a tiny space gap in between the phone’s body and the battery cover, the phone’s cover cloth got caught in that tiny space and I couldn’t get it out. I needed to take the cover of the battery out to untie the cloth case of the phone and the phone turned off, while in the middle of a call. It wouldn’t be such an issue but because of the Android os and the way all the software/processes starts itself at boot up It takes a while to turn all of them off in order to make sure the battery won’t be wasted by unnecessary software running in the background.
These issues connected one to each other can get annoying.
I am keeping close the Nokia E72 anyway, it’s very reliable so I won’t give up on it completely. After testing the battery life on an Iphone 4, Streak and a Nokia, I am definitely starting to appreciate what Nokia and Symbian are offering. Iphone 4 ranked the worst for battery life but it offers the best screen quality and lag free operation. The job I have gives me the opportunity to interact with the latest devices or seeing lots of devices of the same type in various scenarios. I’ve recently had an Iphone4 that I needed to restart 4 times in order to make it react to my key presses on the screen. Myself and the owner were shocked. Due to the screen resolution and some other factors the battery life on the Iphone4 is terrible, it’s a gorgeous device but for me Streak wins over the Iphone.
Overall I think this is the best smartphone on the market for the needs I have. I tend to read documents on the go (various books, word documents, pdf files) besides the usual browsing and Internet related activities so the form factory, size helps me a lot.
