Default Dell Mini 9 Modded for 128GB SSD - 04-07-2009, 09:56 AM

Avid netbook modder JKK has modded his Mini 9 to fit in a 70mm PATA SSD (the type that fit Asus EEE models), giving him the ability to upgrade to a 128GB Runcore drive from MDD.
[news-gallery:1duwzyre][/news-gallery:1duwzyre]The mod requires some minor carving and modification of the Mini 9 case, so it might not be for the feint hearted, but its certainly proof of how creative modders are becoming with the Mini 9.

Benchmarks and more pictures at JKKMobile.

Thanks for all who sent this in.

It seems like if Dell had put the socket hidden at the side of the board they could have made the mini 9 accomodate the larger SSD from the factory.

That said, I wonder how taking out those support posts effects the stability of the fram and keybaord.

They don't - those are the posts which you screw then end of the 50mm (half length) SSD cards into, they support nothing else. They are just in the way of the longer one, so the only real impact to the integrity of the Mini 9 is the shaving of the casing with the dremel and the removal of the clip that holds the wire for Wifi (which you just re-route).

This is nice, but why isn't there a way to solder a connector to where the WWAN is on the board to add another ssd? That's more like what I would like to see.

How much are those drives 400 bucks? I thought I was sick buying the 32gb for 220. Oh well, seems pretty cool.

Because the pinout is completely different.

but if you got a hold of a board with the WWAN port already on it the socket sits too low for a dual sided card. so your out of luck again. There was a thread on that here forever ago. now if you are hoping to get GPS inside there instead you'd be in better luck

I'm actually more interested to see what alternatives besides Runcore that we can use with this "mod". I'm sure there must be some more varieties of 70mm SSDs since it's for the EEE.
