Default Mini 1012 tablet mod, multi touch, Windows 8, transfelctive screen - 12-21-2011, 12:35 AM

This is a brief description of a 1012 tablet conversion. I used a $100 netbook (the Dell 1012) on sale, a $100 multi touch screen kit (capacitive touch), a $5 lcd extension cable, and a $200 Pixel Qi screen. The Pixel Qi is very optional and only recommended if you plan on operating primarily in full sun (as I do).

Moreover, if you want the standard Windows 8 experience, you are probably better off staying with the 1376 x 768 stock lcd as Windows Metro doesn't work at resolutions below 1024 x 768. I got around this because I have an Intel GMA graphics card that allows 1024 x 768 resolution on the Pixel Qi by changing Display1_DownScalingSupported in the registry. The Pixel Qi is 1024 x 600 natively.

Below are some pictures that describe the process. To do this you need to use the Dell 1012 manual (online) for disassembly. You also need to know how to solder and have a fine tip on your iron. This mod is interesting because if you keep your bezel whole, it is completely reversible if you want to get your netbook back.

More complete photos (~30) are here:

They touchpad on the 1012 is so darn crappy I'll never spend another buck on it.

My wife ruined the screen so I upgraded it to HD, I maxed the mem when I bought it, I took HDD out and put in a memdisk, then loaded Ubuntu.

Next, I bought a tablet computer and haven't touched the 1012 since.

not to mention the crappy gold borders...well I guess its to each their own, better his Mini than mine, but give the guy credit for trying, personally, I would just rather buy a tablet for less than $400 or at least spend another $200 and buy an IPAD....

PS. I still LOVE my 1010.....
