Default Mini 9, Ubuntu Intrepid and the Card Reader - 01-28-2009, 08:22 PM

Hi everyone,

I am having problems with the card reader and Memory Sticks. I have Ubuntu 8.10(Intrepid Ibex) installed along with WinXP and it is like the hardware doesn't exit in my Ubuntu 8.10 installation. The hardware works perfectly under Windows, so I have an idea that I hope some of the user out there could help me with.
Could someone out there who has a Dell Ubuntu install(not the netbook remix, but the one Dell ships on the Mini 9) insert a Memory Stick into their Mini, open a terminal, and enter 'dmesg|tail' and then copy/paste the results here, please?
This would give me a good idea as to what could be going on.

Thanks,
RM Flagg

Doesn't Dell ship Ubuntu 8.02 Hardy Heron with the Mini 9?

Yes, or rather, Ubuntu 8.04. But what he's asking for is that someone post the details for the working default Dellbuntu 8.04 card reader so that he can compare it to his 8.10 install. I would gladly do so if I hadn't already put Win7 on mine to test it out.

If you don't get an answer in a week or so I'll Dellify my mini again and see what's up

Here's what I get from a 512MB Memory Stick Pro Duo in its adapter

[ 123.136981] memstick0: switching to 4-bit parallel mode
[ 123.137239] memstick0: could not switch to 8-bit mode, error -62
[ 123.342900] mspblk0: p1

mount:
/dev/mspblk0p1 on /media/disk type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,shortname=mixed,uid=1 000,utf8,umask=077,flush)

Ok, I have a little more information concerning the card reader and Memory Sticks. It seems that the controller chip in the reader has some support in the generic kernel, but not full support.

The kernel in the Dull Ubuntu must have been recompiled with better support. The only thing that, I think, we can hope for is that there will be more support in the next Ubuntu release, 9.04(Jaunty Jackalope).

I don't know if I would consider this matter solved, but I don't think that there is much more that can be done until a future kernel version.

Thanks,

You're obviously a higher order kernel geek than I but could surgery be done?

Yea, I'm sure that the kernel could be recompiled, but I must admit that I really don't want to mess with it. My days of going through the process of compiling a kernel for just one "feature" are over. I will wait for a new version of Ubuntu and it should be taken care of by then.
The main thing that was bugging me was that there was no known reason why it wasn't working and it seemed to be working with the Dell Ubuntu version. If that version has the Memory Stick reader working fully, it will probably make it into the next kernel version.

Thanks,
RMFlagg
