Default Virtually increase your Dell Mini Screen Resolution - 01-04-2009, 02:35 AM

Not sure if this was posted before but here is something very interesting. Have you ran into applications that have windows that are too long to fit on the 1024x600 screen and prevent you from accessing those buttons? I have found a way to temporarilly/permanently fix that. Simply drop down to a terminal window and type:

Code:
defaults write -g AppleDisplayScaleFactor <scale factor>
So to get a virtual screen resolution of, say, close to 1280x750 you type:

Code:
defaults write -g AppleDisplayScaleFactor 0.8
Any new window that is open after this will be scaled down by 0.8, creating the illusion of it being in a 1280x750 screen.

If you want to make things permament type:

Code:
defaults write NSGlobalDomain AppleDisplayScaleFactor 0.8
My prefered solution would be to do it via a small menu bar item that could be selected to pick a 0.8 or 1.0 scale factor on the fly, for those darn applications that don't fit. But I now have to learn how to do this in Xcode.

I have made a quick and dirty application gui to do this using the temporary method. You can simply download and run as an application.

I could add this to the GUI but in effect hitting the 100% will reset things to, well, 100%. I could change the 100% title to Reset to make it less confusing.

I also want to add a "Make permanent" tick box to make either the 80% or "Reset" permanent so after a reboot everything will either be 80% or normal.

I just tried it out, but although it worked fine for some apps, it ballsed up Firefox completely.

I do it per app. So, for example, with System Settings...

Code:
defaults write com.apple.SystemPreferences AppleDisplayScaleFactor .75
Then I only get the prefpanes reduced, since those tend to be nonresizable.

It would be nice if there was a slider or something we could run as a program to make this happen on the fly.

Has anyone tried the handicap settings?

OK, knowing that the only stupid question is the unasked question...how do you determine an application name for the format used above? I have a program I use called AASync2, but com.apple.AASync2 does not work as the application name.

Any help would be appreciated.
